ST-HENRI RUG EXPOSITION…

was lovely! A nice selection of rugs and punch needle done by the St. Henri rughookers. There was a wonderful presentation by Jacques and Isabelle on Friday night – a couple who are passionate about their rughooking and up cycling of old clothing into beautiful art… Hope you enjoy the pictures. Unfortunately, I realized afterwards as I looked through them that hmmmm we missed a few!!!! and some of the name tags are a tad illegible…

NEW PIX…

Had a fun, fun day at Stitch by Stitch on Tuesday – there was a lot of hooking and punching and chatting going on.  So nice to see so many familiar and NEW faces!!!! My next morning at the shop will be June 13.

Today we are off to Montreal for the rug exposition hosted by the St. Henri Rughookers. I hope to have some wonderful pix to share of the rugs on display. And tomorrow I am teaching Canolas in Beaconsfield – cannot wait to see what designs these creative ladies come up with.

Sunday is Mother’s Day – to all of you mothers out there – have a wonderful day hopefully full of fun with family and some sunshine and wow maybe even a few creative moments.

The other night I woke up early – seems to be earlier and earlier all the time. As I sat in the living room sipping on my Tim Hortons decaf all of a sudden I heard grind grind gnaw gnaw chomp chomp! OH NOOOOOOOO – THE DREADED PORCUPINE WAS BACK! Turning my wooden house into kindling!!!! She has come back every year for a few weeks of chowing down on my front steps – we have turned them and sprayed them with smelly stuff to keep her away and what does she do – start gnawing on the back of the treads! so we put up chicken wire all around the back of the stairs and what did she do – ate through the darned chicken wire and chomped on the back of the stairs. Wellll, out I ran in my pj’s and started jumping up and down on the porch – now this is 4 a.m.  Still dark, freezing cold and I look like a lunatic jumping up and down on the porch and screaming at the porcupine!  WELLLLL waddle waddle – out she pops from the pond! Do porky’s swim???? she must have been having a drink but there was also a biggggg racket under the porch!!!  TWO PORKYS! two tooooooo many!!!!!! But they both took off like a flash – yup they CAN move fast when the spirit takes them – up a tree – wayyyyyyy up the tree!!!! Later I found that nope she had not been swimming or having a drink in the pond – she actually chewed my bullrushes down to nubs in the water! Better the bullrushes I say – than my wooden house!!!! Although we discovered some new nasty damage on the garage door frame! So if anyone has suggestions (besides getting in a hunter to do away with her permanently or bonking her over the head!) …

And now a few pix to share

Night time houses (one of my kits) hooked by Tara…

Eggnormous (pattern by Sandi Percival available through me) hooked by Elaine…

Cat Landscape (one of the Karla Gerard miniature punch needle patterns I sell) punched by Louise…

HIP WADERS ANYONE?…

or maybe an Ark!!!! Days and days of steady rain and wow things are a bit soggy around here! The pond has overflowed and the lake has risen. Thank goodness we are at the top of a hill with a steep slope so it is a longgggg way before the lake rises to our level! I must say I am getting a little mouldy and the anticipation of more days of rain and yikes FLURRIES on Tuesday is not doing much for my level of motivation! So it is nice to see rugs by others who are perhaps not as affected by grey dismal skies as I am… Elaine sent me this picture of her rug (design by Suzanne Hill). When she sent it she did mention perhaps she should have hooked hip waders! But what a fun rug this is and it would be fun too hooked in those funky wellies that are now all the rage!

and Donna’s Maud rug with bright skies!…

Tuesday I will be at Stitch by Stitch from 10 – 12. Hope to see some of you there…

MORE MAUD…

Firstly I do apologize for the pix on my post of the annual that were missing names or hmmmm somehow got messed up (Gord’s fault!! 🙂 ). Some have been corrected (many of the theme rugs including the winning piece by Debbie Harris) were missing names and slowly but surely we are getting those and I am making corrections so if you know of any of the missing names please get in touch with me and I will correct them.  Thank you to all who have emailed.

I should also mention that my miniature punch needle class is full (I have a waiting list) but a couple of spots in Wendo’s needle felted lamb chop still are available. Wendo is an amazing felter and teacher – you will love this class so please let either of us know if you want to join us…

and now for some Maud rugs! Thank you to those who sent these in…

Nancy sent her rug…

Ruby sent hers…

Wendy and her Maud and an original Maud painting that was purchased for 8.00 – add a few zeros to that nowadays…

Della Ann hooked these two pieces…

and one I have never seen by Allanah…

and Elaine’s chair pad with braided edge…

I know there are more out there!!!!

MAUDIE…

Yesterday I went to see the movie, Maudie, which tells the poignant story of Maud Lewis, a folk artist from Nova Scotia. The movie was wonderful – it did not overly romanticize the lives of Maud and Everett – at times it was raw and gut wrenching. Maud fought a battle with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis and later in her life was severely crippled – to the point where holding a paintbrush was painful, yet she managed to inject humour and joy into every one of her paintings which reflected the world around her – AS SHE SAW IT! If you have an opportunity to see this lovely movie do so – and take a lot of kleenex!

A number of years ago I took not one but TWO classes with Pam Langdon who taught about Maud and how to hook her paintings. Patterns are available from Highland Heart Hookery in Halifax. Here are a few of my hooked Maud’s.

Oh and if you see the movie – don’t leave (like everyone else) when the credits start – there is a lovely surprise injected in the credits that make it worth staying to the end!

If you have hooked a Maud send me a picture – I would love to post it.

And a few rugs by others…

Julie’s canola moose…

Tara’s rug for her doggies – Tara just started hooking a few months ago…  Nancy’s table runner of the birds who surround her…

PIX FROM THE ANNUAL…

Okay folks, so here are the pix. I do apologize to all those who displayed rugs that are not included in these pix – there were SOOOOO many amazing rugs but soooooo little time to take them all in and take pictures of each one plus the hooker/designer information. There are a few included that don’t have names – if anyone knows who the rughooker and designer are please let me know. I do hope that the pictures we WERE able to take give you an indication of how wonderful our annual event is and tempt those of you who are close by (or far away!!!) to come to next years annual rug show and conference in Ottawa. So, without further ado – enjoy!!!

OHCG ANNUAL IN COBOURG…

was absolutely wonderful! The venue for the rugs and vendors was big, bright and spacious – and beautifully set up. Our dinner/theatre evening Saturday was such fun – delicious food (always very important) and the performance (Forever Plaid) was hilarious and spoke especially to those of us of a certain age! The ladies in Cobourg did an amazing job organizing this annual – everything went smoothly all weekend long. Thank you and congratulations on a job well done! In between selling and schmoozing I (well actually Gord!) did manage to get pix of some of the rugs – I wish we could have taken a picture of every rug that was on display but that was just not going to happen. So what we did try to do was take pix of rugs that would give you an idea of the variety of styles, colours, cuts and techniques and alternative fibres to inspire and excite you. So over the next few days, as I get time to clean up and figure out names of rugs, hookers and designers I will post the pix we did take…

If you have never been to one of the OHCG annuals you are missing a fabulous weekend. Next year the Ottawa guild will be hosting the annual the weekend of May 5 – 6. It promises to be another outstanding event!

At the same time as the annual conference another display was being held at the Art Gallery Northumberland in Cobourg. This gallery is housed in the beautiful Victoria Hall building on the main street. Sadly both displays ended yesterday but I did get a few pictures at this one as well which I will post today. We tried to get the tag with the name of the rughooker and designer – I hope you can zoom in on these 🙂 .
