Andrea finished hooking the next two pieces for the family of a dear friend who recently passed away – what a wonderful tribute… The first was a free pattern in Rughooking Magazine – Not Quite White designed by Karen Larsen and the second was a design by Isabelle Rollin. Andrea decided to hook the background so it would look like a Peruvian blanket…

I had also been asked if I would donate a piece for a silent auction being held today to raise funds for the Ukraine. I started punching a sunflower only to realize hmmm I had only a day left to finish and frame it and it was not going to get done. Instead, I decided to donate a fun purse I had hooked that still had a lot of yellows and blues in it and keep the sunflower for another time…
Today I finished punching (miniature) one of the Karla Gerard patterns I offer for rughooking and miniature punch needle. I sooooo enjoyed working on this – had it almost finished in 2 days but put it aside to take to Montreal with me to work on. I punched this one entirely in 100% merino fingering yarns which I am now offering in 50 yard skeins in a variety of colours. I love the way these yarns punch up and the look is so rich. I use them single strand and they fit perfectly in my medium needle (which I have in stock). I will be framing this piece in an antique Eastlake frame (which needs a bit of TLC and cleaning) and doing a scalloped penny edge down the sides picking up some of the fun colours from the flowers and birds…

As you know!!! I collect antiques and junk – well what others consider junk but what I consider useful treasures. I found this wonderful really grungy butter press years ago – it needed some clean up and repairs and a little punched piece. What to put on a butter press!!! Especially since it had to be quite small (about 2 x 3 inches). Well – of course I could have just punched the word “butter” but instead decided to punch the origin of butter – a COW! Finished her and attached her to the front of the butter press… Now to finish off 2 more so that I have justification for going junking again …

From Wendy…”Years ago Vince and I made these clay faces hands and feet with Karen and Louise’s guidance and the poor fellas were imprisoned in a bag in my sewing room closet literally for years! We tackled the finishing in February! Vince carved the canoe and paddles, painted the little brown jug and pet goose and I made their garments and dressed them…so happy to complete a project together that didn’t end in divorce lol!”…

Mary’s beautiful hooked piece… “During a year in which I faced the both the challenge of living in the Covid world and recovery from back surgery, I came across a piece of art called “Faith or Fate” by Dimitri Sirenko, and was completely taken by it. My reaction, unlike many to whom I showed it, was one of faith in the power of facing our fears and challenges. I approached the artist , who lives in Vancouver, and asked if he would allow me to attempt to interpret it as a picture rug. He responded enthusiastically, saying he looked forward to seeing the finished product. I was not able to reproduce the luminance of the painting, but came as close as I could to the tones, with the yarn that was available to me. My interpretation: In the face of adversity, the seal has faith in its strength & courage, and stands its ground. The Orca recognizes that strength and courage, and, in admiration, slows its approach and retreats in respect. In the times that we are living right now, Faith is the only option.”
I have been having fun doing up patterns for people. This one I did for Kelly who wanted a pattern with a red IH tractor, bee skeps, chickens, her house, her grandson and the jersey cow, a Bernese mountain dog… in other words a story rug. Something had to tie things together so I drew in a road leading from the tractor back to her house – it was so much fun and I hope she enjoys hooking it…oh and it had to be primitive!!! yeahhh…
