REBEKAH’S PATTERNS…

Welllll, the cheese craving has disappeared and I have not grown whiskers or a tail yet so I think I am good!!!! But I am buying Irish Spring soap and placing that and fabric softener sheets in multiple places in the cars so that we DON’T have unwelcome invaders. Stay in the billy boots in the garage or the golf shoes but stay out of my car!

I have been busy busy dyeing wool and making patterns for rughooking but ALSO putting together some of Rebekah Smith’s wonderful wool appliqué patterns as kits. I have a few available (remember my prices are in Canadian dollars so if you live in the U.S. there would be about a 26% decrease in any of my prices). Send me an email if you love Rebekah’s work as much as I do and would like to try one of these kits (will have a few more coming up soon).  The price includes the pattern, wool for the project(s) and freezer paper…

Folk Hearts for Home $50.00

Merry Mittens $50.00

Sewing Roll Set $50.00…

Please email me for the kit price on Fresh Foliage and Garden Hearts…

PICTON FIBREFEST…

was wonderful. On the way I got rather peckish and reached into the armrest to pull out a package of trail mix so I could eat the peanuts! Wellllll after a few minutes of picking out what I wanted to eat I noticed hmmmm, nuts in my lap! where did they come from – YIKES there was a big hole chewed in the side of the package!!!! and chewing on the top! and bits of stuff in the armrest!!! UGGGGGGGHHHHH thank goodness I did not eat the chocolate covered ones! 🙂 Quickly put the bag back and the contents will now be given to chippy and little red squirrel. I think I am fine although I do have an inexplicable craving for cheese!!! and my nose twitches!!!!  How did that little mouse get into the arm rest – the crack is less than 1/4 inch. In the other car we opened the glove compartment to find it full of deer food!!!! Someone’s winter stash – NOT MINE!

So a few pictures to share:

And a few hooked pieces to share:

Marjorie did a wonderful appliqué finish on her Haida Woodpecker rug designed by C Edenshaw …

Diana finished her turtle – my sister, Betty, made the wire carcass…
Brenda send me a picture of her 3 finished punch needle pieces…Sheep Farm and Folkart Sheep are Karla Gerard designs I carry and the sheep at the bottom is my design, Floral Sheep – which originally started out as a rughooking pattern…

FINISHING CLASS…

Yesterday was a fun day working with a few ladies to finish off the edges of their rugs. We focused on show binding (my way 🙂 ) and pillows using the show binding as a flange.  There are so many fun and different ways to finish off the edges of your rugs. I love to try different finishes – I have done whipping (way toooo much), show binding (which I love because it allows me to play with a plaid or stripe along the edge, braided, proddy, appliqué, tongues and pennies. Finishing rugs is a job that many people do not enjoy – I try!!! to finish each rug once the hooking is done – trying different finishing techniques makes it so much more interesting – each rug becomes a challenge to try something new. Right now I am working on a tessellation as part of our Camp Iawah Retreat challenge. It will become a bigggggg pillow (since really, wall space is getting somewhat limited!) and I am thinking of trying something bigggg and chunky along the edge – exactly what, is yet to be discovered…

A few other finished pieces to share:

Lynda needle felted directly onto the linen and onto her hooking in this version of Lisa Ferguson’s Pileated woodpecker – how wonderful!…

Oooops how did this guy sneak in 🙂 … and Tara’s most recent finished piece using up reds and greys…

UPCOMING FIBRE SHOWS…

Ahhhhh, warm weather and a day with no rain! Of course, tomorrow it is supposed to be pretty nasty – thunderstorms and hot and humid! Does Canada really have 4 seasons 🙂 . Ahhhhh – I know we have black fly season, then mosquito season, then deer and horsefly season and then winter! But I will splash on my Deet and play in the gardens a bit and enjoy the sun on this spring like day.

**** addendum – forgot to post this yesterday and YUP it rained megabuckets this morning which I did not mind as it soaked in the new plants we put in the garden yesterday and the ones we moved!!!!  But because the black flies were just soooo fierce I let Gord do most of the work while I supervised from behind a screen door! For years I have been tempted to hook an honking big blackfly with fangs hanging onto a screen door – ohhhh maybe I could stretch screening across an old window frame and hook right into the screen!!! no background! 🙂 hmmmmmmm!

A few upcoming fibre shows to tempt you! A wonderful daytrip to these shows which are located in beautiful little towns with the opportunity to see a variety of fibre related vendors of supplies and finished items – what could be better.

Prince Edward County Fibrefest takes place next Saturday from 9 – 4:30 in Picton(Ontario)(fibrefest.ca).

Kawartha Yarn and Fibrefest in Fenelon Falls(Ontario) on June 8 from 9:30 – 4:30.(kyaff.ca).

ANDDDD…

A show of incredible, out of the box, fibre art at the Mississippi Valley Textile Museum in Almonte (Ontario) coming up at the end of June… hope you get to enjoy one or all of these fibre shows!…

HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY…

From a non mom – although all my fur kids would beg to differ! And although I am not a mom, I am now a Grand-Aunt or Gr-Aunt! As of yesterday afternoon we have a new little addition to the family with the lovely name of Layla (since my nieces call me Lola I figure that is close enough to feel somewhat honoured and since one of my favourite songs is Clapton’s Layla even better!). So congratulations to all the old and new mom’s – may you all have a wonderful day.

Now, if you have not treated yourself for Mother’s Day there is still time sign up for the Northumberland hookin in September – a wonderful  day  of  hooking, camaraderie  and  the  chance  to  take  one of 4 fun workshops.  Registration  for  the workshops  has  been  extended  to  July  26  and  the  hookin  and  workshops  are open  to all i.e.  you  do  not  have  to  be  a  member  to  take  a  class.  More details on the  workshops  and  how  to  register  can be found at cobourghookin.blogspot.ca. Hope some of you can join us on September 30…

I will be teaching a workshop on primitive/wide cut hooking of my little Primitive Sheep door pouch:

CHRISTMAS IN JULY…

Well, with the weather today it appears we may actually be getting closer to summery weather. Yesterday was beautiful – so lovely in fact that I spent a few hours working on gardens and then a few more working on my back and shoulder!!!  But the sun warming me up made it all worthwhile. And these jobs need to be done before the nasty black flies discover that it is hmmmm, spring!!!!

So, with the heat of summer looming, Carol and I have decided we will need a wintery celebration at the end of July so we are offering 2 workshops.  Carol will be teaching her WOOLLY FEATHER TREES and I will be teaching WOOL APPLIQUE MITTENS. We will both be teaching these workshops at Fibrefest in Almonte in September (you can now register for the workshops on the website for Almonte Fibrefest http://almontefibrefest.ca/workshops/) but for those who cannot make it we thought we would have a mid-summer Christmas workshop. Details on the workshops and how you can register are shown below. Both workshops will be held July 27(Saturday) here at the studio from 10:30 – 3:30 with a break for lunch 12:30 – 1:30. After the workshops, if weather is nice, Captain Highliner will offer boat and swimming excursions! Please register early as space is limited…

WOOLLY FEATHER TREES:

Come and make a woolly feather tree. These cute little trees are great for Christmas or any time of
year. The kit includes dowel, wool, wire, floral tape, clothes pin and a base.I will supply the glue.

Please bring a ruler, sharp pointy scissors (your bent scissors work well), a sharpie marker and an
old coffee mug, that you can use to hold the bottle of glue upside down, it helps things move along
quicker. If you don’t have one don’t worry about it, there is lots of time to get the tree finished.

Workshop fee $40.00 (includes lunch and snacks); Supply fee $40.00. Please register by emailing me at cshewan@kingston.net – deposit of workshop fee will hold your spot.

WOOL APPLIQUE MITTENS:

Let’s get ready for Christmas and the winter early by making these wonderful wool appliqué mittens.

Kit includes pattern by Rebekah Smith, wool for both mittens and freezer paper.

You will need to bring along a good pair of long scissors, crewel needle and embroidery thread. Valdani threads can be purchased in the studio.

Workshop fee $40.00 (includes lunch and snacks); Supply fee $50.00 plus HST. Please register by emailing me at hookedonthelake@kingston.net – deposit of workshop fee will hold your spot.

OLDE FORGE HOOKIN …

Was such fun – over 100 hookers braved the rain, cold and snow – YES SNOW!!!! to come and be inspired, entertained and eat really delicious treats. Thank you to the ladies who organized this year’s hook in and worked so hard to make it a wonderful day for all. We all get to see people we often only see once a year. We get to see the progress on rugs that we have perhaps not seen in a while and we have such a fun day. Vendors this year were amazing! I ended up bringing home a couple of Jacques’ cutter boxes – these are based on a vintage shoe shine box I discovered in a junk store. I thought hmmmm – I am not shining any shoes! but I realized I could attach my Townsend or Rigby cutter to the handle (because many of the hookins or retreats I go to don’t have tables that are the right thickness for my cutters) and allllll my strips fall into the box below and at the end of the day I can just drop (well gently) my cutter into the box. Ahhhh there is ALWAYS a good use for junk! Anyway a few months ago I showed my shoe shine box to Jacques and voila – he designed an even BETTER one – higher so you don’t have to lean over as far, wider handle and BIGGER BOX! So I now have a few in stock and am selling them. So, if, like me, you have found it a bit of a hunt to find a table where you can mount your cutter when you go to an event and you think you you might like one of these amazing carrier/boxes/portable tables give me a shout…

Although I did NO HOOKING at the hookin – I did finish a commissioned piece just before I left. It is an Old Tattered Flag pattern and I had such fun dyeing the wool and hooking it for a friend. The best thing is it will belong to someone else and won’t be mine 🙂 . I counted up the rugs I have hanging and lying all over the house and oh my I think there are over 30 NOT INCLUDING the ones packaged away in my cabinet! or hanging in the studio !!!! soooo I am thrilled to be able to hook and NOT add to my collection of rugs 🙂 .

And, finally, I painted and distressed a little antique footstool and attached a small rug that has been hanging around unfinished for way tooooooo long!…
